Zithromax
Zithromax is an antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is a macrolide-type antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu).
Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
How to use Zithromax
Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Take Zithromax orally with or without food. To treat most types of infections, you will need to take Zithromax for 3 to 5 days.
To treat a chronic infection, you may need to take this medicine for a longer period of time.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
The Zmax extended-release suspension (liquid) is taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal as directed by your doctor. To ensure that you get a correct dose, measure the suspension with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one.
To take the Zmax extended-release suspension (liquid), follow these directions and the directions on your medical prescription label. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
- fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
- easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
- pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness;
- increased thirst, loss of appetite, swelling, weight gain;
- urinating less than usual or not at all;
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
- fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; or
- severe nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Less serious Zithromax side effects may include:
- mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain;
- headache, dizziness, tired feeling;
- ringing in your ears, hearing problems;
- white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;
- vaginal itching or discharge;
- mild skin rash or itching;
- anxiety, sleep problems (insomnia);
- or
- mild itching or skin rash.

Overdose
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222 if anyone has accidentally swallowed the medication.
Notes
Do not share this medication with others.
Laboratory and/or medical tests (such as liver function tests, complete blood counts) may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details.
Use this medication for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Zithromax will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while using Zithromax.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Do not take this medication if you are allergic to azithromycin or to similar drugs such as clarithromycin (Biaxin), dirithromycin (Dynabac), erythromycin (E.E.S., EryPed, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin, Pediazole), or troleandomycin (TAO).
To make sure you can safely take Zithromax, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
- liver disease;
- kidney disease;
- myasthenia gravis;
- a heart rhythm disorder;
- a history of Long QT syndrome; or
- low levels of potassium in your blood.
FDA pregnancy category B. Zithromax is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
Azithromycin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not take this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Older adults may be more likely to have side effects on heart rhythm, including a life-threatening fast heart rate.
Zithromax is not approved for use by anyone younger than 6 months old.
