Nolvadex (tamoxifen) is a non-steroidal anti-estrogen used to treat breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic breast cancer), to treat breast cancer in certain patients after surgery and radiation therapy, and to reduce the chances of breast cancer in high-risk patients such as women with a family history of breast cancer. Nolvadex may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
You should not use Nolvadex if you are allergic to tamoxifen, or if you have a history of blood clots in your veins or your lungs.
To make sure Nolvadex is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
a history of blood clots;
a history of stroke or heart attack;
high cholesterol or triglycerides;
a history of cataracts;
if you are taking a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven); or
if you have any other medical conditions.
Do not use Nolvadex if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby. Use effective birth control, and tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.
You should not breast-feed while you are using Nolvadex.
Nolvadex is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
How should I take Nolvadex?
Take Nolvadex exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Nolvadex is usually taken for 5 years. Follow your doctor's instructions.
You may need to take Nolvadex on a schedule other than once per day, or you may need to take it for a longer period of time than 5 years.
Your doctor will perform blood tests to make sure you do not have conditions that would prevent you from safely using Nolvadex.
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
